Parenting classes in Modesto and Stanislaus County: how to choose one
Parents in Stanislaus County can choose from free community classes, the court’s own class for custody cases, self-paced online courses, and live classes like ours. The right one depends on why you need it, your schedule and language, and, if you were referred, what your court or caseworker asks for.
A local guide from Relieve Counseling in Modesto. Updated October 2026.
If a court, CPS, or probation asked you to take a class
Ask them what counts before you sign up anywhere. Requirements differ by court, case type, and county.
- Get the details in writing if you can: how many hours, which topics, your deadline, and whether a live class or an online course is acceptable.
- Ask who should receive proof of completion, and whether they need your written permission to get attendance or progress updates.
- Ask the class provider for an outline of topics and a sample certificate. Compare them with what you were told.
- Confirm with your attorney, caseworker, or probation officer before you pay.
- Keep copies of your certificate and any attendance records.
If you’re choosing a class on your own
Any class that fits your schedule, language, and budget is a good place to start. Look for one that teaches practical skills you can use at home, in a format you’ll actually finish.
If you’re expecting a baby or have a newborn, hospital and pregnancy-center classes on birth, newborn care, and feeding cover different topics than the general parenting classes on this page.
Some orders call for a specific program
For example, probation for child endangerment can require at least one year of a treatment program approved by the probation department (California Penal Code section 273a). A 10-week parenting class, including ours, does not meet that kind of requirement.
Types of parenting classes you’ll find here
Free community classes
Family resource centers and nonprofits offer free or low-cost parent education, often in English and Spanish. Schedules and eligibility vary, so call ahead.
The court’s class for custody cases
Stanislaus County Superior Court says Family Court Services offers a class on parenting issues at no cost to the parties in custody matters. Ask your mediator.
Self-paced online courses
Recorded lessons and quizzes you finish on your own time. Usually the lowest cost and the most flexible. Check that your requirement allows a self-paced course. See live classes vs. self-paced courses.
Live classes
A facilitator teaches a group at a set time, in person or on video, with discussion and practice. Attendance is taken at each class.
Pregnancy and newborn classes
Hospitals and pregnancy centers teach childbirth, newborn care, and feeding.

Common questions
Are there free parenting classes in Modesto?
Yes. Family resource centers and local nonprofits offer free or low-cost parent education, and Family Court Services offers a class at no cost to the parties in custody cases. Call 211 for current options near you, or use the phone numbers in the list above.
Can I take an online parenting class for a Stanislaus County case?
It depends on your court, your case type, and who referred you. Some accept online classes, and some ask for a specific program. Ask your attorney, mediator, caseworker, or probation officer before you enroll.
Are there parenting classes in Spanish near Modesto?
Yes. Our Spanish group meets on Thursday evenings on Zoom, and several community programs offer classes in Spanish. Ask each provider about its current Spanish schedule.
How long is a court-ordered parenting class?
It varies by order. Ask the court or agency how many hours they need, and check that the certificate lists the hours. Our program is 15 contact hours over 10 weeks.
Is a parenting class the same as therapy?
No. A parenting class teaches skills in a group. It doesn’t assess or treat anyone, and finishing one is not an evaluation of parenting capacity.
